Glowworm

E.T. phone home!

Evie has a bili-blanket strapped on to help her work through a mild case of jaundice. It turns out that Colorado's high altitude contributes to jaundice in newborns. It's not a big deal, and it's actually kinda cool to see her glowing. She should be all better in a few days.

But for now, she is her own night-light.

They'll Let Anyone Have a Baby

You'd think having a baby might make me less of a child. You'd be wrong.

Day 3

Evie has been awake more, and keeping us awake more. :)

Coming Home

We're finally back home! The dogs got to meet Evie, and she's getting some rest. So glad to be back!

Picking Sides

Evie just got dressed up for her official pictures and now she can start showing her allegiances. Baby Evie is sporting a custom made Ferrari onesie with her initials and some Boston Red Sox socks to keep her from scratching her face.

Day 2

Evie came out of her newborn sleepiness last night just as Sarah and I got showered and were ready to finally get some sleep. :) We were up nearly every hour, but it was nice to finally see her feeding and being more active. From about 5:30 to 8:00 am she rested constantly, and so did we.

She got her hearing test and her first round of genetic tests, and she's been cleared to go home. So now all we're waiting on is for the doctor to come in and clear Sarah to go home as well.

A Few Pictures

Evie is doing well. She's got a lot of amniotic fluid in her tummy that she's getting out, so hopefully her appetite will increase once she's all clear. She's still VERY sleepy. She went through a tough birth!

Evelyn Christine Scaling

Born 6:14 am October 26, 2008
7lb 10oz
21 in
Light Brown Hair
Blue Eyes

After 22 hours of labor, 8 hours of active labor and 2 hours of pushing, Evelyn Christine Scaling was born at St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. The doctor who delivered her was Javine Horoni.

A healthy baby girl!

Pushing

Sarah started pushing at about 3:30am and was making great progress. Unfortunately, Dr. Horani just went into a C-section at 4:15am and since Sarah is getting very close to having the baby, she has to stop pushing for about 30 minutes until Dr. Horani gets out of surgery.

On Nurses

Radiance and Dr. Horani

Over the course of the day, we have had 3 different nurses taking care of Sarah. First was Kristin, and when her shift ended at 1:30pm we had Sara. Sara's shift ended at 7pm and now our nurse is Radiance. There was an EMT trainee assisting during Kristin's shift as well.

In all, we've been quite happy with our nurses. Especially Radiance, who has been very kind and helpful during these late stages of labor.

Midnight Surprise

At around 11:30pm Sarah woke up feeling some discomfort, and it turned out she was dilated to 5cm. After getting comfortable and getting some more sleep, she woke up again at around 12:30am feeling lots of pressure. She had dilated all the way to 7cm, and by 1am she was already up to 9cm! So the baby is on the way.

Sarah's taking a short nap now, getting ready for the pushing stage, which should be coming on before long. Hopefully Evie will be with us soon!

Mercy Meal

Since Sarah had breakfast at 7am this morning, she hasn't been allowed to eat all day. Luckily, Dr. Horani showed some mercy and is allowing Sarah to eat a light meal. A ham sandwich, some chips and apple juice. A feast for my starving wife.

We're watching a movie while she eats, but soon we'll be getting some sleep in preparation for the hard work ahead tomorrow.

Breaking the Water

Dr. Horani came in at about 8:30pm and broke Sarah's water to try and get things moving. She doesn't expect the baby to come until later tomorrow morning, but at least we'll get some time to sleep.

The Epidural

The Anesthesiologist

Sarah decided to kick it up a notch and get an epidural. She isn't feeling any pain now, and is very sleeply. Luckily, she should have time to get some sleep. Sadly, she's still only at 3cm and ~80% effacement. So there's still a long road ahead, but a least now she's feeling no pain!

Doctor Horani is on her way in and will likely be breaking Sarah's water to get things going.

Getting Some Rest

The pain killers gave Sarah and I a great opportunity to get some sleep. They restarted her Pitocin at 2mL and she's still contracting. They're giving her some more pain killers to keep the pain down.

Starting the Fun Part

Sarah's contractions got much stronger following the OSU loss, clearly Evie is mad about the game. She got some pain killers to help take the edge off and is resting now. 3cm dilated and 60-70% effaced, she's coming along slowly.

The nurse stopped the Pitocin for now because Sarah's contractions were too close together, but they're going to start it back up later if they can.

Don't be scared by the oxygen mask, they just gave it to her as a precaution after administering the pain meds.

Cribbage Time

Contractions are still getting slowly more intense, but nothing major yet. To kill some more time, we all played some cribbage.

Monitoring the Monitors

Sarah and our nurse Sara

Staying the course. Pitocin up to 30mL and maxed out, so it's just the waiting game now. The most action happens when the nurses come in periodically to readjust the monitors.

More waiting

Sarah's contractions are getting a little more uncomfortable and coming along slowly. The nurses say they'll call doctor Horoni when they get Sarah's Pitocin to 30mL, which should be in about an hour.

Meanwhile, OSU is not helping us keep our morale up, since they're down 14 to Texas.

Go Pokes!

Watching the Oklahoma State game while we wait for Evie. Go State!

A Long Day

We get settled in and watch some Indiana Jones, waiting for things to get going.

Killing Time

Our Nurse Kristin and the EMT Trainee Assisting Her

Sarah got up for a little while, and sat on the birthing ball. Getting a little stir crazy. Sarah keeps getting her Pitocin bumped up, and the doctor will come by in about in hour to check on things.

Popsicle!

Sarah enjoys the closest thing to food she is allowed.

Contractions are still mild, and Pitocin has been bumped up over time from 2mL to 6mL, and now 14mL. Also, the monitors aren't picking up the contractions very well, so they keep readjusting them.

Keep Checkin'

The nurses come in every 20-30 minutes to check the monitors and readjust them as Sarah moves around. Still not much change.

Resting Up

Just getting some rest. Contractions still mild.

Getting Started

Sarah arrived at the hospital at (a little after) 8am to be induced. Pitocin was administered at around 9:30am. Contractions are 3 minutes apart and mild.
